The magnet grips through most cases up to about 3 mm. If yours is thicker, or it's a rugged case, use the clip that comes with the Complete Kit — it holds mechanically and doesn't care about case thickness.
It connects over Bluetooth and drives the zoom in your phone's native camera app. Most third-party apps pick it up too, though a few ignore external controls entirely.
Weeks of normal shooting on one charge — the shutter and zoom draw almost nothing. The fill light is the hungry part; expect a couple of hours at full brightness. Both recharge over USB-C.
